Hellas Gold received two new major distinctions at the Responsible Business Awards 2023 which highlight its dedication to operating to the highest safety and environmental management standards internationally, while also confirming the company's long-standing commitment to operating in accordance with the principles of sustainable mining to generate positive social and environmental impacts.

More specifically, the company received a Gold Award in the Corporate Governance System category for the Public Consultation on its new investment plan in NE  Halkidiki, as well as a Silver Award in the "Technology & Health" category for the innovative System for Measuring, Recording and Monitoring Physico-chemical Agents in an Underground Mining Project (the Canary Project).

Public consultation for new investment plan in NE Halkidiki In the summer of 2022 Hellas Gold launched a public consultation on the Social and Environmental Impact Study for its new investment plan so that the local community could be informed about it and freely express its views, raise queries, concerns or disagreements, and also make proposals. The extent of the consultation was unprecedented by Greek standards, with 12 events open to the public and 13 focused discussions with groups of representatives from local authorities and organisations. The process was successfully completed and all views and stances were recorded. It was an important step in structured, substantive dialogue between stakeholders, giving real substance to the concept of “stakeholder engagement”.

In order to take proper decisions and suitable preventative and corrective actions, Hellas Gold's Health & Safety Department went beyond the minimum regulatory requirements and developed an innovative system for recording and analysing measurements of physico-chemical agents in the underground mine (the Canary Project) and set up the Canary Gas Focus database for toxic gas measurements in order to investigate and prevent any risks arising from exposure to gases in an industrial environment. This is achieved by constantly recording and taking measurements during shifts, thereby creating a comprehensive database to monitor all occupational risk factors.

Picking up the awards, Mr. Gerasimos Monokrousos, Hellas Gold's Corporate Communications Manager, said: "Hellas Gold's philosophy can be expressed through three simple ideas: keeping our employees and their families safe; respecting the environment; and frank dialogue and harmonious coexistence with the local community. Tonight's awards make us particularly proud, as they serve as acknowledgement of our commitment to consistently and responsibly promote these simple ideas, and at the same time reflect our dedication to operating based on the highest standards internationally of safety, social accountability and environmental management."

The award ceremony was held on Wednesday 12 July 2023 at the Wine Museum under the aegis of the Ministry of Development and Investments, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy and the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises, and was widely attended by representatives of public sector organisations. The opening keynote was given by the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments, Mr. Maximos Senetakis.

Note too that for 8th  consecutive year the Hellenic Responsible Business Awards have rewarded companies which promote the values of sustainable entrepreneurship by investing in sustainable environmental and social development.
