Hellas Gold received two new major distinctions at the Health and Safety Awards 2023, confirming its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest levels of health and safety at work.
More specifically, the company was declared “Winner” in the "Quarries & Mining" category for its innovative System for Measuring, Recording and Monitoring Physico-chemical Agents in an Underground Mining Project (the “Canary Project”) and for the UG Safety Monitoring System, while the latter also garnered a Gold Award in the "Facility Upgrade & Modernisation” category.
The Canary Project was developed in-house by Hellas Gold's Health & Safety Department in an effort to more rapidly take proper decisions and suitable preventative and corrective actions which safeguard employee health and safety. Commenting on this distinction, Mr. Michalis Michaloudis, Occupational Risk Factor Measurement and Measuring Instruments Coordinator at Hellas Gold's H&S Department, said: "I am proud that Hellas Gold believed in me and gave me the opportunity to develop the Canary Project. I am honoured to belong to a company that prioritises innovation and safety and I look forward to continuing this beautiful journey by further developing this innovative application".
The UG Safety Monitoring System is a set of technological applications developed following installation of the first underground private mobile telephony technology network in Greece; it helps safeguard human life by providing critical information in real time, something which is particularly useful in emergencies. Gerasimos Monokrousos, Hellas Gold's Corporate Communications Manager, said: "Hellas Gold's underground mine at Olympias covers tunnels running to a length of 10 km overall with a maximum depth of up to 300 m below sea level; this – coupled with the nature of mining work– explains why it is vital to ensure the maximum levels of health and safety. We are particularly pleased with this award and dedicate it to the 1,500 employees at our mines in Halkidiki, who each and every day demonstrate in practical terms our collective dedication to our zero-accident policy".
The award ceremony was held on Thursday 8 June at an impressive event at the Hellenic Foundation for Culture attended by top executives from the business world.
It should be noted that every year the Health & Safety Awards reward companies that have created and maintained safe workplaces, developed a preventative health and safety culture among employers and employees and can serve as examples worthy of imitation in their sectors of activity.
