With great pleasure, we welcomed undergraduate students and professors from the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, to the Kassandra Mines. The visit was part of their education on underground engineering design and construction, focusing on technical geological and geotechnical assessment.
The students and accompanying professors were guided through the mining facilities of Olympias, where they were impressed by our company's nursery established in the "courtyard" of the plant. This nursery restores the former tailings storage area from previous mining activities and is one of the largest in Europe, spanning 150 hectares with 1,000,000 endemic and local plant species. These plants are utilized both for restoration efforts in our operational areas and for the needs of the local community.
The tour continued to the state-of-the-art Kokkinolakkas Tailings Management Facility. The development and operation of this facility represent an environmental enhancement and restoration project for the area. It not only accommodates the residues generated from the active Olympias mine after excess water removal but also historical deposits dating back decades from earlier mining activities (1969-1995) in the region.
The students enthusiastically participated in demonstrations of tunnel excavation and fire protection using simulators and virtual reality equipment at the Training Center of Hellas Gold at the Mavres Petres mining facilities.
