Environmental Monitoring
Program

WE MONITOR THE ENVIRONMENT ACROSS 500 CHECK POINTS

Evaluating environmental health

The environmental monitoring program is a legal commitment of Hellas Gold. It involves the qualitative and quantitative monitoring of all parameters linked to, or potentially impacted by, our mining operations.

Specifically, we pull together information from 500 check points that record, check, examine and measure the performance of our operations, assessing 13 environmental parameters:
01.

Ecological and chemical quality monitoring of rivers and coastal waters in the area.

02.

Chemical quality of groundwater and drinking water in the area.

03.

The chemical quality and quantity of wastewater (mine treated water).

04.

The level of noise and vibration inside the construction sites, the residential areas and high-traffic road areas.

05.

Dust emission in construction sites and residential areas.

06.

Air quality at residential areas (Stratoni, Stratoniki, Stagira, Palaiohori, Neohori & soon at M. Panagia).

07.

Meteorological parameters.

08.

Geotechnical and physicochemical monitoring in the dry-stacking tailings facility at Kokkinolakkas.

09.

Qualitative and quantitative monitoring of mining extractive waste.

10.

The soil’s chemical quality.

11.

Electricity consumption.

12.

The daily number of heavy vehicles in the area’s road network.

13.

Ecological monitoring (flora and fauna).

MEASURABLE & ACCESSIBLE RESULTS

We measure. You monitor it in real time.

The data collected by the environmental monitoring program are available to the public via an open access online platform of Hellas Gold.

One of the most advanced check point networks in Europe

To monitor these parameters, we pull together information from over 500 check points. This network includes, among others, seismographs, vibrographs, portable and fixed noise monitors, portable and fixed dust emission meters, air quality monitors, meteorological stations, flowmeters, pH meters, drilling for groundwater level and quality monitoring, and selected points for soil and water sampling.

The operating costs of the program amount to 2 million Euros per year. It is staffed by 11 full-time employees (Hellas Gold and contractors). The cost of the metering equipment purchased and installed to this day amounts to 4 million Euros.
