Leading-edge technologies

TECHNOLOGY & PRODUCTION

We are using the latest technology, from Operations to Environmental Management

Technology allows us to seek continuous improvements at all levels, from training to upgrading our facilities and operational systems. Technology innovation is also essential in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint.

OPERATION & PRODUCTION

Digital transformation at the Olympias mine

At the Olympias mine, we use new and state-of-the-art practices to support mine modernization, greater safety and increased productivity. Find out more about the innovative technologies we use at a depth of 300m.

CAMPUS NETWORK & REMOTE MINING TECHNOLOGIES

At the Olympias mine, we have enhanced safety and productivity with the campus network, operating at a depth of 300 metres below sea level.

Our high-tech campus network offers greater safety for our workforce, increased productivity, improved communications and fast transmission of crucial data. The network’s infrastructure has been designed and installed in the underground mining areas of Olympias in collaboration with COSMOTE. This complex project is unique in Greece: it is installed at a depth of 300m and covers an underground area of approximately 10km.

The innovative 4G/LTE network allows a series of leading-edge features in the underground mine, such as remote blasting, Ventilation on Demand system, remote mucking, and vehicle telematics. The complete and advanced control room at the surface provides non-stop control of the network and its cycle in real time, ensuring safety and productivity for operations on the site.

A DIGITAL SYSTEM FOR MINE SAFETY

The latest technologies & applications for greater safety

The Underground Safety Monitoring System is central to our operations. In compliance with the Eldorado Gold’s Golden Rules for Health and Safety, all workers in the mine wear safety beacons, which is part of their mandatory Personal Protective Equipment and provides precise and real-time location of the underground mining workers. The readers, installed in specific areas of the mine (entrances, underground ramps and tunnels, passages, cross-sections), detect and transmit miner device signals to the control room, enabling live tracking and visibility for employee safety.

TRAINING & SAFETY

Technology enables dynamic workplaces

Discover more about how we invest in the future of our people and how technology helps us shape personal growth and professional development for our workforce while promoting safety, responsibility and productivity.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAMS

Training in simulator real-world conditions, with the use of augmented virtual reality

Moreover, we lead the way in training our technical personnel by introducing and implementing new training methods, such as experiential learning. E-learning prepares our employees in real-world mining conditions. The interactive features of our simulators are designed to train employees in handling mining equipment. Enhancing their skills helps foster a culture of safety in our workforce and offers deeper knowledge in optimizing production.

Simulator learning fuels skills growth and optimizes the mining methodology.

FLAIM TRAINER

We build a safety-ready workforce

At Hellas Gold, the health and safety of our workforce is our top priority. We have therefore trained our Rescue Team and the local firefighting department with the FLAIM Trainer system. This innovative program uses virtual reality technology that allows firefighting and rescue personnel to safely experience realistic fire scenarios and improve their reflexes and methods.

CANARY GAS FOCUS

We innovate in the monitoring of occupational risk factors

The Health & Safety department at Hellas Gold has designed an advanced system for recording and analyzing physicochemical parameters in real time. It has created a single Canary Gas Focus database which allows for better risk management and greater performance through smarter decision-making and the submission of sustainability reports, based on reliable data.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Innovation drives sustainability in environmental management

From advanced monitoring systems to cutting-edge restoration technologies, explore how Hellas Gold contributes to sustainable environmental management.

01.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING PROGRAM

We monitor the qualitative and quantitative performance of our operations in real time

To ensure environmental performance with maximum accountability, Hellas Gold has launched a comprehensive Environmental Monitoring Program, one of the most advanced monitoring programs for the environment in Europe, with 500 control points producing data published in real time on a dedicated open-access online platform.

02.

BEST ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES - BACKFILLING

Repurposing tailings for responsible and sustainable management

With this innovative and sustainable method, tailings and waste rock are repurposed as backfill to stabilize the underground mining and surface operations. In addition, Hellas Gold is committed to restoring the area to its previous natural state after the closure of the ore-extracting activities. Surface mining restoration is carried out almost concurrently with underground activities.

03.

BEST ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES - DRY-STACKING

Dewatering is recognized worldwide as the best tailings management practice

The Skouries mine has been designed in compliance with the highest environmental standards. The project incorporates dry-stacking for safe and more effective tailings storage and management. This technology reduces the operational footprint by 40%, since a substantial area that would otherwise be utilized for storing liquid slurries is now released. It also helps in maximizing the recycling and reuse of water during the production process, thereby reducing the consumption of natural water resources.
