I have had the privilege to work at Hellas Gold as the Emergency Response Coordinator for the past 9 years. In this role, I have come to understand the utmost importance of a robust emergency response system in the mining industry. The knowledge that we are a critical line of defense in emergency situations cultivates a strong sense of duty and pride. It's not just a job. It's a collective commitment to the safety and well-being of our colleagues.
My industry is one of the most male-dominated worldwide, making the presence of women challenging. However, it is hopeful to notice that an increasing number of women are joining the mining sector, taking on roles at all levels of hierarchy. With 26 years of experience, I lead an interdisciplinary team of engineers, geologists, and highly trained personnel in one of the most significant projects in Greece and for a company that provides equal opportunities to its employees.
The role of the Mine Dispatcher in the Control Room is crucial for the smooth operation of the mine, as it relays all the information within production and among departments. The daily dedication of my colleagues to safely achieve production targets is being reflected through daily communication and collaboration. This experience has enabled me to strengthen my skills further and engage with technological innovations in the industry.
I have been working for Hellas Gold as a geotechnical engineer since 2017. The opportunity to participate in interesting technical challenges alongside exceptional colleagues in a safe work environment, as well as continuous learning, are the drivers to move on.
By its nature, the underground mine where I work as a shift engineer, is a demanding work environment that drives intense efforts; however, until now, I have encountered no tough difficulty to overcome. A key reason is that the Skouries Project, as a whole, from surface to the underground development, is a chain in which I feel a part of. And this motivates me to find solutions and move forward.
I have been working for Hellas Gold since 2011 as an underground shift boss. The uniqueness of my position lies in having to assign tasks to be performed during the shift, always having the safety of our people as the priority. The nature of my work is such that everyday life is always different, it's like a new day.
Since 2017, as an underground production engineer at Olympias mines, safety is my priority in daily work. I am responsible for about 40 people per shift and I am tasked with ensuring that we all return safely to our families, providing solutions to production challenges, and making immediate decisions. I feel proud to work in my field of interest at the largest mining company in Greece and to be able to contribute to the implementation of innovative solutions, such as remote mining methods and control room.
Since 2012, I've been working as an underground loader operator, which is a significant specialization as we are the first to enter the underground after blasting and must remain vigilant. I'm proud because the company not only provides the appropriate means for our work and safety but also cares for the community, the environment where we live, and our families. Both of my sons participate in the robotics program funded by Hellas Gold, and in fact, the older one was part of the team that represented our country in Singapore.
My experience as a mine geologist reflects on my resilience and passion to contribute to the dynamic world of the mining industry and embrace challenges and opportunities in a traditionally male-dominated sector. I am proud to be part of this community and especially of Hellas Gold and to have the opportunity to break barriers and pave the way for greater diversity and excellence in our field.
