Overall, the contribution of the mining sector to the national economy and development is equivalent to 3.1 % of GDP, employing 108,000 workers and generating a revenue of €6 billion per year, €1.7 billion in new investments and €1.1 billion in export value.

Gold Properties | Uses

Gold (Au) is a precious metal known for its rarity, beauty and resistance to corrosion. Throughout human history, gold has enjoyed widespread use in jewelry, investment, and as a decorative element. Thanks to its exceptional conductivity, resistivity and its capacity to act as a good radiation shield, gold is used across numerous industries, including electronics, dentistry and aerospace engineering. Gold reflects light, infrared light and heat, and is therefore widely used in construction, energy and astronomy.

Copper Properties | Uses

Copper (Cu) is a reddish-brown metal known for its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. It is widely used in electrical wiring, plumbing systems and various electronic devices. Copper's antimicrobial properties make it suitable for applications in healthcare environments such as hospitals and water purification systems. In addition, copper is used in architecture, transportation and renewable energy technologies.

Copper is also used in the e-mobility industry. The demand for copper in the e-mobility industry is huge: an electric car requires up to 4 times more copper compared to a conventional car (up to 80 kg of copper). The demand for copper is accelerating energy transition and is expected to double by 2035, which is why it has been identified as a Strategic Raw Material in the European Critical Raw Materials Act published in March 2023. According to the Regulation, by 2030, 10% of the Association's consumption of strategic mineral raw materials should be extracted within the EU.

The world-class copper and gold deposit at Skouries will provide a new source of supply for the European industry in strategic raw materials such as copper, enhancing the resilience of the European supply chain and making NE Halkidiki an important international mining center.

Silver (Ag) is another precious metal that has been used throughout history for its beauty and versatility. It has excellent thermal and electrical conductivity properties, making it indispensable for applications such as electrical contacts, batteries and solar panels. Silver is also used in photography, jewelry, coins, mirrors, medicine, and in various industrial applications such as chemical production and water purification.

Lead Properties | Uses

Lead (Pb) is a dense and malleable metal that has been used for thousands of years. As a highly corrosion resistant metal, it is suitable for applications in construction, batteries and radiation shielding. Thanks to its relatively low melting point and widespread availability, it is suitable for low temperature applications such as welding. It is also used in electrical components and lead-acid batteries as a source of backup power in the event of a power failure. It is an ideal insulating material and has anti-seismic properties.

Zinc Properties | Uses

Zinc (Zn) is a blue-white metal widely used as a protective coating for iron and steel (galvanizing) to prevent corrosion. It is an essential component in many industrial processes, including the production of brass and various alloys. Zinc is also used in batteries, sunscreens, food supplements and as a catalyst in chemical reactions. It is a sustainable material, suitable for energy-efficient construction and useful in agricultural soils. Zinc is present in the human body, in small yet essential amounts. It supports a number of crucial functions and boosts our immune system.
