The Kassandra Mines today

The Kassandra Mines are located in northeastern Halkidiki, within the administrative boundaries of Municipality of Aristotle and include:

  • the world-class copper-gold Skouries asset,

  • the modern Olympias gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, which is in production,

  • the state-of-the-art Kokkinolakkas Tailings Management Facility,

  • the port and storage facilities at Stratoni, and

  • the Mavres Petres mine, which has been in care and maintenance status since end of 2021.

THE HISTORY OF THE KASSANDRA MINES

Mining for 25 centuries

The history of the Kassandra Mines spans over 25 centuries. The earliest evidence of mining activities in the area of Kassandra is traced back to ancient Greece and the Roman times. The mineral reserves of Halkidiki comprise 160 tonnes of gold, 2,000 tonnes of silver and 1.5 million tonnes of lead and zinc. The area’s mining capacity is  ranked among the largest in Europe, making Greece one of the leading copper and gold production countries internationally.
